The iPad – Apple finally addresses feminine hygiene? January 29, 2010

Steve Jobs premiered the new Apple iPad on Wednesday to obligatory media overhype (“Apple haven’t announced anything for 5 minutes, somebody get me a sound bite!”). But tablets – technology for technology’s sake?

The iPad looks like a bloated iTouch and suffers many of its mini-me’s failings: no camera, no removable battery, app store exclusivity, no USB connectivity, no Flash player. The last omission may be excusable for the smaller predecessor burdened by 3G and usage ceilings but the inability to watch YouTube or iPlayer on such a glorious LED screen is surely a missed opportunity. Apple really haven’t developed anything ground-breaking here – it’s just an iTouch with a 9.7inch screen.

I’m not alone in my consumer cynicism. In a Wired online poll only 39% would buy the iPad and of the 60% declining, 71% claimed their existing smartphone and laptop had it covered. People will buy the iPad, as (once again) Apple have designed a beautiful piece of kit. However Apple is entering an established market, having addressed none of the past criticisms, with a product that is more form than substance. Much like the introduction of the perfumed pantyliner.

Your view of consumer cynicism is perverse – I’m sure Steve Jobs would be delighted to hear that 39% of consumers would buy the iPad! The big picture here is that these type of devices will make their way to the mass market with the introduction of rival devices and will likely replace nettops for many people. Oh, and Apple will probably sell a few…
By the way you can connect via USB but will have to upgrade yourself from full moron status…

Classic Apple-fanboy blind rhetoric.

39% of tech-savvy Wired consumers who will inevitably already own Apple products – this percentage will not translate to the mass market. I conceded that Apple will inevitably sell a shedload of iPads. My attack was aimed at the pointlessness of first-generation tablets in general, not specifically the iPad.

With regards USB connectivity, I meant that the iPad has no USB port, just the default Apple dock. Therefore, if you want to connect a memory stick or digital camera you will have to upload via your laptop/desktop. Thus undermining the iPads portability. Unless of course you purchase Apple’s special converter cable/dock for £30-£50….

au contraire mon frere – an Apple fan but it doesnt mean I’m gonna buy one. Nonetheless, I see that there will be a market. I see your point now – if only there were a way of having a second generation without having a first generation… Others will follow, indeed are awaiting in the wings. You’re knocking the manufacturer for its implementation rather than the product concept, and that my friend marks YOU and a blind Apple knocker.

Perhaps I will have to concede on USB – I guess the £2.30 cable is going to make the whole thing unaffordable… Unless your one of those people who already had one that you got with your iPod – shame they didn’t sell many of those…

Not to mention the iPad Keyboard dock which turns it into a desktop/laptop and the iPad Case which are also sure to be competitively priced. However at least they may be compatible with the iPad v2 which is sure to be released in 6 months with extended battery-life….

Ms Sands put down your iWONTBUYAPPLE phone and eat your jelly or you’ll be late for double geography.

Nothing original here. Another pop at Apple and most of it regurgitated. If you’re going to write on this subject then how about saying something new. Otherwise you’re just another one in a million posting crap that no one will read.
